Pumping Mistakes

Pumping breast milk can come with a whole lot of challenges. Here are some of them:

Using the wrong flange size:

When you buy your breast pump, you'll get their standard size flange which is usually 24/25mm. The problem is that for most mothers this side is too big, and sometimes each breast needs it's own flange size!

Having the wrong flange size is one of the most common (although not only) reasons for pain, discomfort and nipple damage when pumping. It can also lower your milk supply and output.

Using the wrong pump settings:

I always say, what works for one mom likely won't work for another.

Cranking up the vacuum strength does not always mean more milk. In fact, for many, it can cause pain and eventually cause damage to the delicate skin around your breast, areola, and nipples.

You can increase the suction as your milk starts to flow when you become used to the pump, but remember, pumping should never hurt!

Short pumping sessions:

If you're pumping to replace a feed, your sessions need to be a certain length to avoid decreasing your milk supply. When you decide to cut your sessions short, your body is getting the signal that it does not need to produce as much milk, which over time will lead to a decreased milk supply.

You should aim for about 15-20 minute sessions. The one exception, if you can't get away at work to pump, you can pump for a shorter time but more frequently. This will send a signal to your body to keep producing milk.

No pumping schedule:

If you're exclusively pumping or pumping to replace a feed because you're away from your baby, you'll need to have a schedule.

Ideally, you're removing milk at least 8 times a day, every 3 hours. This type of schedule ensures that you're removing milk frequently enough to continue making milk.

Schedules can vary depending on your unique self! (age of baby, your storage capacity, breastfeeding goals, etc)

Everyone's routine will be different because every mom's goals are different. Please don't look at your friend or that girl on tik tok who stores 12- 8oz bottles of milk everyday.

Depending on your goals, you really need to find a schedule that's most appropriate for you. Then, you do need to stick to it so you can get the results you are looking for.
